With just days to go until the Gay Ski Week QT 2016 extravaganza kicks off with the Broken Shed Opening Party on Saturday 27 th August, all the guests and stars of the show are starting to arrive.
Spring skiing conditions are looking great; there’s blue skies and soft snow and here in Queenstown New Zealand, we’re all gearing up for the biggest Winter Pride event in the Southern Hemisphere.
Stepping onto a plane to join us at any moment is the outrageous, the fabulous entertainer and MC extraordinaire, Luke Bird – aka The Birdman. Birdman is hard to miss, the larger than life character is 6’4” tall and has a colourful background in opera singing, acting, comedy and musical theatre. It’s no wonder he won the Gay Ski Week Karaoke Night last year.
“The judges were out there bitches, there was some harsh and hilarious feedback,” says Birdman.
This year, Birdman will join Miss Ribena and the cruel crew of judges for another fun-filled Karaoke Night. Birdman will also join Miss Ribena MC-ing the “buffet of awesomeness” at our Queer Quiz Night on Monday 29th August at downtown bar Ballarat Trading Company.
Luke Bird says he can’t wait to MC the Drag Race (“It’s going to be a laughing, snowy mess,” he says) and is looking forward to “celebrating fun, celebrating people and most of all being part of the great vibes.”
“It’s the biggest party of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and I love being a part of that,” says Birdman.
“I’m new to ‘the scene’, but I’ve found that since coming out I’ve been getting busier and loving what I do even more. At Gay Ski Week, people can expect the KAPOW! I’m fun, spangly and vivacious. I love celebrating individuality and that’s what this week is about.
“I’d say GSWQT first timers should expect the unexpected and expect to be a little out of their comfort zone. I don’t know how GSWQT pockets all of this fabulousness into one week. There’s so much on for everyone and everyone is embraced (gay, straight, whatever). This week isn’t about hooking up it’s about celebrating and having fun!”
When chatting about his very first trip to Queenstown and Gay Ski Week QT, The Birdman says it’s the scenery that instantly blew him away…
“The moment I got off the plane, I thought HOLY SHIT, is this a movie set?! I expected someone to roll away the mountains, they just don’t look real.”
We’re really looking forward to catching up with The Birdman this week (and proving that yes, the Remarkables are REAL). Don’t miss him at the Drag Race, Karaoke Night and Queer Quiz Night… as well as adding a touch of sparkle at all the parties.
