Queenstown throws up some hidden gems and Bar Up is no exception. A hard-to-find lounge upstairs in The Mall, you half-think you're entering a winter cabin in the woods when you arrive. A fireplace rages on one side, hipsters huddle on comfy couches and low-hung ceilings add extra intimacy. In summer of course it's a different feel: French doors open up on the spacious balcony and a breeze comes in off the lake.

They stock fine wines and whiskeys and staff have an extensive cocktail repertoire too. And are home to the world famous Money Shot.

The Brecon Street Merchant

Back in the 1920s, prohibition was in full swing. Hard working citizens had to think of illicit ways to enjoy a refreshing gin after a hard day’s toil. The local merchants answered the call; pop in for groceries or a haircut, disappear into the back room for a few moonshines.

Queenstown’s newest bar is tapping into this flavour. It has a working barber shop out front and ‘build your own gin rickeys’ out back. With small batch tonics, one and two litre growlers and that ‘good old days’ vibe, it’s set to be your regular spot for after work refreshments and late night shenanigans
